Chapter 13-Graphic Novels

Graphic novels are a form or format of literature and can cover a variety of genres and sub-genres. In last twenty years Graphic Novels have grown in popularity with children and teens, and in past years and even today were referred to as “comic books.” This is because they tend to have a comic like appearance while also like a novel in length as well as their writing in the method of the dialogue and narrative arrangement. Graphic novels can be fiction, non-fiction, history, fantasy, or anything in-between.
  • Graphic novels are different from picture books and earlier comic books due to their complexity
  • Graphic Novels are often enjoyed by a wide range of readers from children to adults. They cover a variety of subject matter like science to civil rights.
  • The text being read is similar to traditional novels, which are read from left to right. This includes the dialog bubbles which are also read from left to right, and top to bottom.
  • Graphic novels consist of a variety of elements including: panels, gutters, dialog balloons, thought balloons, captions, and side effects
  • Graphic novels promote literacy by containing all elements of literature and by teaching mood and tone.
  • Many teachers now use graphic novels in their curriculum.
   Major Types of Graphic Novels:
·         Manga – Japanese word for comic, they use the traditional Japanese reading pattern of top to bottom and right to left. Titles include Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist
·         Superhero Story – Dominated by the mainstream publishers Marvel and DC. Titles include: Batman and The Dark Knight Returns.
·         Perzine – Personal Narrative, autobiographical stories
·         Nonfiction – Like Perzines but they touch on social issues
Reflection

Graphic Novels are quickly becoming the top requested book by students. I know in my classroom currently many students are bringing books from home that are graphic novels. I know that whenever I do add books to this category in my classroom, it is quickly checked out. I have third graders in my classroom so many of my students are very interested in anything to do with superheroes. Graphic Novels can be fun to read while at the same time offer a wealth of information for a wide range of readers. This is because students can learn many different topics from graphic novels. Graphic Novels can help librarians and teachers aid readers into making a transition from picture books to chapter books with the use of graphic novels.
