Critical Analysis:

The author Duncan Tonatiuh shares the journey of Jose Guadalupe Posada life in this captivating biography. The beginning of the book sets the history of Posada’s childhood, how he learned to read and about his discovery of his lifelong passion for printing. The book goes on to discuss some of the struggles he faced from having to move because of political views in his artwork to losing his shop to a flood. After those struggles he continued to draw cartoons but was best known for his Calaveras drawings. When you think of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (day of the dead) you imagine the Calaveras drawings.

The book includes an author’s note, bibliography, glossary, and index. The artwork alone was fun and engaging but Tonatiuh also incorporates Posada’s work into his illustrations, which makes this book even more amazing to view.  Funny Bones Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras story has a wealth of knowledge for readers that have no background knowledge of this holiday. This book is appropriate for a wide range of ages from young readers to adult readers. Young readers will be engaged by the artwork and older readers will be hooked by the content.

Tonatiuh includes six pictures that get the reader to think about the message Posada was trying to convey. He uses both his style and Posada’s Calaveras. This book will leave a lasting impression and is a great resource to use with a lesson on the day of the dead.
