Critical Analysis

Winter Bees & Other Poems of the Cold is a collection of poems that will engage both poetry lovers and scientists. Throughout the book, there are scientific facts about that animals living and surviving in the harsh winter climate. Each page includes a paragraph that provides facts, locations, and actual scientific names. The information provided enhances the reader’s experience and keeps readers engaged. This book is appropriate for young readers but can also be very resourceful for older readers.

Rick Allen adds complex detail using the linoleum blocks. The double-page spreads of images are very well-done and provide the reader with the right amount of detail to enhance the reading experience. The illustrations truly draw the reader into each story and allows them to stay entranced with each animal’s story of survival. The rich, warm colors of animals and burrows contrast with the cool colors of the sky and the snowy landscapes to further show the differences between the creatures and their surroundings.
